Chronic Pain and PNE+

What Is Chronic Pain?

Chronic pain persists beyond normal healing time—typically longer than three months—and involves a complex interplay of the nervous system, emotions, beliefs, and behaviors. Living with chronic pain can feel isolating, frustrating, and overwhelming, affecting every aspect of daily life.

The Empathic PNE+ Approach

PNE+ (Pain Neuroscience Education Plus) reframes pain as a protective output of the brain rather than a simple indicator of tissue damage. By weaving empathy and compassion throughout the entire process, we not only share cutting-edge pain science but also validate each patient’s unique experience and struggles.

How Empathy and Compassion Are Integrated into PNE+

1. Initial Empathic Education

• Active listening to understand each patient’s story, fears, and goals

• Validating their pain experience

• Gentle explanation of how the brain produces pain as a warning signal

2. Movement Re-education with Support

• Graded exposure to feared movements, paced by the patient’s comfort level

• Encouraging self-compassion when setbacks occur

• Celebrating small wins to build confidence

3. Active Rehabilitation and Empowerment

• Personalized exercise plans co-created with the patient

• Ongoing encouragement and reassurance: “You’re making progress, even when it doesn’t feel that way”

• Teaching mindfulness and breathing techniques to manage flare-ups

4. Hands-On Care with Compassion

• Manual therapy delivered with care

• Checking in: “How does that feel? Tell me if it’s too much or too little”

• Integrating cognitive-behavioral strategies to reframe negative thoughts
